Is Globalization a Dialogue of Civilizations?
Long before September 11, 2001,
Binghamton University was grappling with problems of conflict and dialogue
among civilizations. Since September 11, those issues have become
even more urgent. Now we have brought some globally-renowned experts
to Binghamton to address these topics. Join us for a day of discussion
on these pressing issues.

“Islam in Africa: A Global, Cultural, and Historical Perspective”
held April 19–22, 2001: hosted by the Institute of Global Cultural
Studies. This interdisciplinary conference focused on the uniqueness
of Islam in Africa emphasizing its global context, from the first arrival
of the religion on the continent up through current events in which Islam
plays a role. Submissions are invited from a number of perspectives: historical,
social, cultural, political, philosophical, textual, economic, linguistic,
literary, etc.

and other details regarding submission of papers to “Islam in Africa: A
Global, Cultural, and Historical Perspective” are provided in
English,
French,
and Arabic.

International Conference on “The Military in Africa and Latin America:
A Dialogue Between Soldiers and Civilians in Quest of Democracy”: organized
by the Institute of Global Cultural Studies, the Institute of Governance
and Social Research (Jos, Nigeria) and the Center
on Democratic Performance and sponsored by the Ford
Foundation in Abuja, Nigeria, August 2000. Details of this conference
will be forthcoming in the next edition of the IGCS newsletter.
